Just a few short weeks ago, radio personalities on 98.5 the sports hub began a worldwide twitter trend following Jon Lester's signing with the Chicago Cubs. The sarcastic #smearcampaign was a huge internet sensation. For 24 hours. Then, like all internet sensations, it died as quickly as it began. If you were away for the weekend, you would've missed it.
Well, they almost returned to their former glory yesterday on the heels of Seattle Seahawks corner back Jeremy Lane. When asked about Patriots All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski during an interview on Thursday, he made the following mind-numbingly daft remark, "I actually don't think he's that good. He's OK. He does have a big body. But from what I've seen on tape, he doesn't like you putting your hands on him. So if we put our hands on him and shake him up a little bit, he won't catch that many balls." Yeah. Rob Gronkowski isn't that good. Sure. That makes sense. People should know by now that it isn't worth annoying the Boston fanbase.
The sports hub's own Toucher and Rich got the ball rolling in their usual sarcastic and wittily antagonistic manner:
It didn't take long for the replies to roll in:
All fun aside, Lane does make one good point, Gronk is a little sensitive to contact at and being physical is definitely the best way to get in his head. It remains to be seen if they can execute their intended gameplan, but it's nice to have something to laugh at in the midst of this ridiculous deflate debate.
